Health Care
Several quality health care options are available to Birds of a Feather Community residents within ten minutes to 1 1/2 hours away in Pecos, Santa Fe, Las Vegas (NM) and Albuquerque.
Pecos Valley Medical Center is a short 10-minute drive from our community. Office visits for routine care, physical exams, and laboratory work are available. Many of our residents use the center for their medical care and two of our residents are also on the Medical Center Board of Directors. Emergency care is available during office hours only. The center has a pharmacy, dental care and x-ray services. Ambulance service is also available. The center is currently in the process of expanding its facilities by constructing a new building for 10 exam rooms, 2 treatment bays, space for diabetes and behaviorial health coordination, as well as a welcoming main lobby!
Santa Fe's largest hospital is Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, which is a 268 bed hospital with 340 staff physicians and the only Level III Trauma Center in Northern New Mexico.
Physicians Medical Center was opened in April, 2007. They offer many specialists with their focus being on surgery.
Las Vegas, NM Health Care options includes Alta Vista Regional Hospital, a 54 licensed bed hospital with many specialties and services offered. It is also home to the only state owned and operated psychiatric hospital, New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute.
Albuquerque is only an hour south of Santa Fe and has state-of-the-art health care facilities including:
University of New Mexico Hospital is consistently ranked in the 100 top-performing hospitals in the United States, and ranks among the top 10 academic centers in the nation. The hospital operates New Mexico's only Level I Trauma Center.
UNM Cancer Center is home to New Mexico's largest and most experienced team of cancer experts, with more than 85 board-certified oncology physicians recruited from some of the world's most prestigious cancer institutions.
The Heart Hospital of New Mexico opened its doors to patients in 1999 and became the state's first hospital dedicated to the prevention and treatment of heart disease.
Presbyterian Hospitals operate seven hospitals throughout New Mexico with two located in Albuquerque.
Lovelace is a member of the prestigious Six Clinic Group of hospitals that offer many specialized services. Lovelace Women's Hospital is devoted to women's health with the Breast Care Center and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Alternative Healing and Thought
With a multi-cultural tradition and a history of tolerance, Santa Fe has grown as a place of alternative therapies, philosophy, and holistic medicine. It has also become something of a spiritual center with many healers, meditation centers, therapists and disciplines of all kinds. There are 500 well-established alternative healing practitioners in Santa Fe, with another 1500 part-time. Opportunities also exist weekly to attend talks, discussion groups and classes on a wide variety of topics exploring alternative healing and thought.
Santa Fe has more than 50 Christian churches, two synagogues, two Buddhist temples and dozens of other spiritual centers supporting many other beliefs. Santa Fe's tradition of tolerance and mutual respect has grown spiritual disciplines ranging from Buddhism to Sufism and beyond.
